The village takes its name from the Ljuta river, one of the short fast-flowing streams that emerge directly into the bay along this stretch of coast. The freshwater spring surfaces close to the shoreline, and the meeting of river and saltwater is a recognised natural feature of the northern shore road.

Like the other small settlements along this stretch, Ljuta developed in the shadow of the larger towns of Kotor and Perast, and its character remains largely agricultural and residential. Stone houses and terraced gardens run toward the water along a coastline that is quieter and less developed than the stretches closer to Kotor. The road north toward Perast follows one of the most scenic stretches of coastline on the inner bay, with open views across to the southern shore and the mountains above it.

Ljuta is best known among visitors for Stari Mlini, a waterfront restaurant set around a converted mill directly on the bay, which draws diners from across the region and beyond. Self-catering apartments in Ljuta offer a quiet base with easy access to both Kotor and Perast without staying in either. Kotor is under fifteen minutes by car, and Perast a short drive further along the shore. The listings below cover restaurants and accommodation in and around Ljuta.
