Most car rental in the Kotor area is handled either by independent agencies in town or by the international chains at Tivat airport (8 km away by road). Picking up at Tivat is usually easier for arriving travellers, agency desks open whenever there's a flight landing, and the airport-to-Old-Town drive takes 15 to 25 minutes depending on bay-road traffic and the Kamenari, Lepetane ferry queue.
Rates start around €25 to €40 per day for a small petrol manual outside peak season, climbing to €40 to €70 in July and August. Family-size cars and SUVs run €60 to €120 per day. Automatic transmission carries a €10 to €25 daily premium. Weekly rentals usually drop the daily rate by 15 to 25 percent.
Most rentals include basic insurance and a deductible of €500 to €1,500, full waiver costs €5 to €15 per day extra. Cross-border travel into Croatia, Bosnia or Albania is usually allowed but requires advance notification and sometimes a green-card supplement. The roads through the Lovćen mountains and inland to Cetinje are narrow with hairpins demanding low gears, make sure the chosen car is comfortable for that style of driving.
