Exhibits include model ships, navigational instruments, uniforms, weapons, maps, photographs and documents spanning several centuries. The collection traces the history of seafaring, naval defence and merchant trade in the bay from the medieval period through to the 20th century.

The museum building is itself a historic landmark within the walled town. The museum is on the main pedestrian street inside the Old Town, a short walk from the main square and the Sea Gate. A ticket is required for entry.
