The cathedral was consecrated in 1166 and is the principal Catholic landmark of the Old Town; the museum sits inside that fabric rather than as a separate building.

The holdings centre on relics and objects connected to Saint Tryphon, the patron saint of Kotor. The Glorious Head reliquary holds the relic of the saint's head; a silver-covered wooden casket holds a bone of Saint Tryphon. Around these the rooms carry a gilded-silver bas-relief altar pala, processional and ornamented silver crosses, reliquaries, vestments and robes, paintings, Gothic sculptures, four eighteenth-century Venetian marble altars, a fourteenth-century ciborium, medieval Dobrota embroidery and Byzantine fresco fragments. A combined four-euro cash ticket at the cathedral entrance covers both the cathedral itself and the treasury rooms above. Guided tours are available in multiple languages.
