Museums in Kotor and the Bay
Museums and galleries in Kotor covering the maritime, civic and cultural history of the bay, with collections housed in historic buildings inside the Old Town. The Maritime Museum of Montenegro, housed in a baroque palace on the Piazza of the Arms, is the most substantial collection in the area, with exhibits covering navigation, shipbuilding and the seafaring families who shaped the bay's trade from the 17th century onwards. Ethnographic and natural history collections in the wider municipality provide additional context for the region's cultural development. Beyond the Old Town, a small number of private galleries operate seasonally from spring through early autumn.
Opening hours vary through the year, with reduced access outside the main season and some collections closed in winter. Most museums in Kotor are compact enough to visit in under an hour, and the principal collections sit within walking distance of each other inside the walls. Entrance fees where charged are modest, and combined visits to two or three sites are straightforward within a single afternoon.
