Skurda Canyon

Skurda Canyon is a steep natural gorge formed by the Skurda River, cutting through the limestone mountainside directly behind Kotor Old Town. The canyon features vertical rock walls, narrow passages and the seasonal flow of the river that carved the gorge over geological time. The depth and narrowness create a dramatic landscape feature visible from several points around the Old Town. The Skurda River flows through the canyon and passes alongside the northern wall before entering the bay near the River Gate.

The canyon is visible from the town walls stairway and from various vantage points around the Old Town. Access into the canyon itself requires appropriate equipment and experience, as the terrain is steep and potentially hazardous. Organised canyoning excursions are offered by local adventure operators for those wanting to descend with guides and safety gear. The canyon sits immediately behind the Old Town, making it one of the closest natural features to the historic centre. Its geological formation contrasts with the man-made fortifications along the ridge above.
