Kotor Churches
Churches and Cathedrals of Kotor
Religious sites in Kotor spanning Catholic and Orthodox churches within the Old Town and the pilgrimage island of Our Lady of the Rocks off Perast. The Cathedral of St Tryphon is the dominant religious building in the Old Town, a Romanesque structure first consecrated in 1166 and rebuilt after earthquake damage in 1667. The Church of St Luke, a few metres away, served both Catholic and Orthodox congregations at different points in its history and retains altars from both traditions. The Church of St Nicholas, the main Serbian Orthodox church in Kotor, sits just inside the walls and dates to the early 20th century.
Our Lady of the Rocks, the artificial island off Perast built up from sunken ships since the 15th century, contains an active pilgrimage church reached by boat from the Perast waterfront. Most religious sites are open outside of service times, with modest dress expected inside all churches. The concentration of Catholic and Orthodox buildings within the Old Town means several can be visited within a short walk of each other.
