The lower sections enclose the Old Town at ground level, while the upper walls climb the ridge in a dramatic ascent.

The walls can be walked along designated sections, with the main stairway of approximately 1,350 steps beginning inside the Old Town. An entrance fee applies at the base access point. The climb is steep and uneven, requiring sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness.

No facilities are available along the upper sections. The walk takes between thirty minutes and over an hour depending on pace. The walls form the most visible element of the Kotor fortification system and are a central component of the town's UNESCO World Heritage listing.
