The Cats Museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and presenting historical material related to cats, with an emphasis on promoting respect for animals and the environment. Its collections span several centuries, with works dating from the 16th century through to around 1970.

The museum displays a wide range of objects, including antique books, prints, manuscripts, coins, medals, advertising materials, vintage postcards, newspapers, magazines, memorabilia, and other themed artefacts connected to the cultural history of cats. Items are arranged chronologically to reflect changes in artistic, social, and cultural perspectives over time.

While the collection features a strong representation of Italian, Spanish, Austro-German, and French works, pieces from other cultural backgrounds are also included. The museum continues to expand its holdings by acquiring additional items that contribute to the depth and diversity of its thematic focus.

Small, But Kind of On-Theme for Kotor

3.0/ 5

We visited in the off-season when the Old Town was very quiet, and that probably helped the experience. The museum is tiny and doesn’t take long, but it does a decent job of explaining why cats are such a big part of Kotor’s identity through old photos, postcards, and bits of artwork. It felt more like someone’s personal collection than a proper museum, which might put some people off. I wouldn’t say it’s a highlight, but as a short stop while wandering around — especially on a cooler day — it made sense. The price was low, and we didn’t feel rushed, which is about all we were expecting.

Skippable Unless You’re Really Into Cats

2.0/ 5

I went in on my own while wandering the Old Town and was done in about five minutes. It’s very small and didn’t really hold my attention, so I wouldn’t bother unless you’re a big cat fan or just passing right by.

A Quick Indoor Stop If You Like Cats

4.0/ 5

We went into the Kotor Cats Museum mostly because we walked past it and had some time to kill. It’s very small and didn’t take long to get through, especially this time of year when there’s hardly anyone around. There are a few old photos, postcards, and bits of artwork, but it’s more of a personal collection than a full museum.

I wouldn’t go out of my way for it, but it’s fine if you’re already in the Old Town and want something quick to do indoors. The ticket is cheap and helps support local cats, which is probably the nicest part of the visit. If you’re travelling with kids or really like cats, you’ll probably get more out of it than we did.
