San Giovanni Fortress, also known as St. John’s Fortress, dominates the town of Kotor from the steep slopes above the historic centre and represents the most prominent element of the town’s defensive system. Rising to approximately 280 metres above sea level, the fortress defines the visual and strategic relationship between the fortified town and its surrounding mountainous landscape.

The origins of San Giovanni date to the early medieval period, with evidence of fortifications on the site during Byzantine rule. Over subsequent centuries, the structure was repeatedly expanded and reinforced, most notably during the Venetian period between the 15th and 18th centuries. These phases transformed San Giovanni into a major stronghold designed to protect Kotor from land-based threats.

The fortress is directly connected to Kotor Old Town by an extensive system of defensive walls extending across steep terrain. This continuous line of fortifications includes bastions, gates, watchtowers, and stairways, demonstrating advanced military engineering adapted to challenging topography.

Architecturally, San Giovanni is defined by functional military design rather than decorative detail. Thick stone walls, narrow passages, and elevated observation points emphasize durability and control. Within the complex are remains of military structures and the Church of Our Lady of Remedy, dating from the 16th century, which held both religious and symbolic significance.

Although the fortress lost its military role in the 19th century, its strategic form and historical importance remain clearly legible. As one of the most dominant landmarks and monuments in Kotor, San Giovanni stands as a lasting record of defensive architecture, urban development, and the town’s long relationship with its surrounding landscape.
